What is the meaning of each letter of Christmas?
There doesn’t seem to be any particular meaning for each of those letters, (at least none I could find, thanks Google), so I went ahead and wrote some of my own. Enjoy, and Merry Christmas/Saturnalia/Winter Solstice, whichever you prefer.
Meaning of ”Christmas” for Pagans
C - stands for Celebration and the Coming together of family and friends. Originally a time of feasting, role reversals, free speech, gift-giving and revelry, Christmas has morphed into so much more, and now includes pagans, and non-pagans, alike.
H -stands for the Hope around this time of year, when we hope that everyone remembers to treat their fellow man, woman and child, with love, charity and kindness.
R - stands for being Respectful of other people’s beliefs during this pagan holiday.
I - stands for the Influence this popular Roman festival has had, and which still continues to be felt throughout the western world.
S - stands for the Saturnalia, the very festival, and celebration, that modern Christmas is based on. It’s a time to celebrate light during the Winter’s Solstice, a day which marked the onset of winter, and the shortest day in the northern hemisphere.
T - stands for Thanks - thanks to the Roman god Saturn for bringing about this wonderful holiday.
M -stands for Merry making. This needs no further explanation unless you’re Scrooge. Bah humbug to you if you are one.
A -stands for Agriculture. Saturnalia was originally derived from older farming-related rituals of midwinter and the , especially the practice of offering gifts or sacrifices to the gods during the winter sowing season.
S -stands for Saturnalicius princeps, or “leader of Saturnalia,” sometimes also called the “Lord of Misrule.” The idea was that he ruled over chaos, rather than the normal Roman order. The common holiday custom of hiding coins or other small objects in cakes is one of many dating back to Saturnalia, as this was a method of choosing the mock king.
