Nipple piercings are straight piercings regardless of what jewellery is in the piercing when it was first done, the barbell allows the piercing to discharge and affords room for cleaning better than a ring does. Don't let anyone tell you that if the piercing is done with a curved needle the piercing is curved, that a line of BS.
Once the piercing is healed you can change over to what is called a "D" ring this ring has a straight section that goes through the piercing and is by far more comfortable than a standard ring. It has the appearance of a ring but the straight segment allows the ring to be moved without twisting a curvature in the piercing like you would with a standard ring. Ultimately for day to day wear the barbell is going to be your jewelery of choice, for comfort and discretion.

no. i got mine pierced with a hoop and then like three weeks after i got it i put a bar in it and it was fine. it doesnt really make a difference as long as its meant for you belly button

Depends on what you mean by small. Gauge-wise, I've seen earlobes pierced up to 2ga. So if your anatomy allows, you can get pierced with a pretty large gauge needle. For length, you'll have to wear a larger ring/longer bar at first to accommodate for swelling. If you get a stud/bar you can get different sized ends. I dont see how a ring can go inside. Do you mean a bar? If the jewelry has been engulfed by the surrounding skin, either go see your piercer or a doctor right away. If it hasnt been completely engulfed, your piercer can remove it, usually for free. If you cant get to them first, go see a doctor to get it removed asap.
