Before multi-tasking was available in smart phones like the iPhone this was impossible. Now it's not only possible but also very common and the most recent apps are removing their "media player" functions from their interfaces so that they focus on their features.
And if we focus on running apps:
A good example is runens an app that takes a minimalist approach with an elegant interface speaking directly to runners.

yes. you could try Jelli, Slacker, Pandora, or if you are looking for AM/FM radio go for iheartradio. personally though, my favorite is Slacker, because it has more rare bands such as I Set My Friends On Fire, although, with a basic(free) subscription, you have to deal with ads./: but, they all have that, as all of the apps I've mentioned are free. but if you want, you can upgrade your Slacker subscription and it will be ad free. Pandora has less ads, but it is VERY laggy and buggish. I never really got into Jelli, and Last.FM is complicated, lol.(; I tried Pandora, It won't allow you to listen to only one band.
