To install formica you will need a "table saw" to cut it at least a 1/2 inch over on all sides and a router to edge it off once it is laid on your surface. you can also edge it off with a good metal file but this way is done with experience-- using a metal file for formica edging is not for the novice. first remember to apply the adhesive to both the table surface and the back of the intended formica and wait about 10 minutes before mating both together and be sure to have a block of wood with a piece of carpet on it for easy pressure sliding to rub your mating pieces. Granite is one of the toughest stones in the world and will not be affected by knives. After cutting directly on my granite countertop, I have experienced that my knives get dull after a few uses only. So cutting directly over a granite countertop will not affect the countertop material but it will affect the sharpness of your knife. Bamboo certainly is enjoying increased popularity as a kitchen countertop material, however there are still valid reasons to prefer granite over bamboo. First, a bamboo countertop must be properly sealed to provide protection from water damage. Second, a bamboo countertop does not provide protection against scratches and knife marks as well as granite. As for cost, high-grade bamboo countertops can be similar in price to granite.
