∙ 2012-04-19 00:40:27The serial number on a Winchester model 53 is on the bottom of the receiver, just behind the foregrip stock.
The serial number on my Maverick 88 is on the left side of the firearm, above the trigger and in front of the stock
Somewhere between 1963 and 1980. Sears used the JC Higgins brand through 1962, and quit selling firearms in 1980. The 273 number is NOT a serial number, it is a Sears stock (catalogue) number. If there is no other serial number, would have been manufactured before 1968, when Federal law began to require serial numbers on rifles and shotguns.
Depending on the quality of the barrel and stock at this time, I have just last month sold mine for 550.00 without a scope.
Check the receiver/barrel

THAT NUMBER LOOKS LIKE A SERIAL NUMBER NOT A MODEL NUMBER. IF IT IS LOCATED UNDER THE STOCK JUST BEHIND THE TRIGGER GUARD IT IS A SERIAL OR PRODUCTION NUMBER NOT A MODEL NUMBER.

The bottom of the barrel, left of center, just in front of the stock.
The serial number is located on the bottom forward edge of the receiver frame right next to where the forend stock adjoins the receiver.
not the original stock.
On the bottom of the receiver in front of the lever just before the fore stock. There is a screw right below the number.
Remove the forearm stock by pulling from the front down(It pulls hard). On the underside of the forearm stock is your serial number. Go to; Diamond Gun Smithing on the internet and look up your serial number. If you find models; click on each model until your serial nuber appears. Example; Serial number 263xxx=Flues model and made in 1915. Good luck and keep that really super shotgun
on the trapddor rifle, to the rear of the receiver, just before the wooden stock
