If your weight loss is sudden essentially your body thinks that you could be in a situation where food is scarce so it will prevent ovulation in order to prevent a pregnancy that may put extra strain on already tight resources. If your diet is poor the effect can be similar, so if you've lost weight because you've been eating nothing but salads and not getting enough fats then your body will think it's in starvation mode or feel malnourished so delay or skip ovulation, so in turn your period would be late.
