Yes I think
Metronidazole is the chemical name for Flagyl. Drinking alcohol while on oral Flagyl can cause nausea, rapid heartbeat and vomiting.
After a one dose treatment of Flagyl you should wait at least 48 hours before you consume alcohol. If you do not wait the recommended time, you could experience negative side effects because Flagyl interacts with alcohol.
Can I take cough drops with menthol in them and Flagyl - there is menthol in the cough drops. Menthol is perhaps alcohol? Flagyl and alcohol make you vomit badly.
Yes, it can "cancel" out a antibiotic. What I mean by that is, you can have negative (bad) reactions to the drug. The antibiotic may not work in some cases. One example is with the antibiotic Flaggyl (Metronidazole). Drinking even a small amount of alcohol (ethanol) while taking Flagyl can make a person very sick. Flagyl and alcohol together cause severe nausea and vomiting, flushing, fast heartbeat (tachycardia), and shortness of breath. It can make you extremely sick.
Flagyl or Metronidazole is not a Penicillin and does not work the same way. So unless you also have an allergy to Flagyl you do not have to worry. This drug is best taken after food or with a fatty meal.
You should not consume alcohol while you are taking Flagyl or for at least three days after you have completed therapy, since the two can interact to cause serious side effects, including intense nausea, vomiting, headache, abdominal cramps, flushing, and a racing heartbeat. In some cases, these side effects may even lead to heart or liver damage.
Alcohol plus Flagyl is a potentially deadly combination. The combo can cause dire illness. The enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase, is inhibited which can cause violent illness. To my knowledge there is no other reason to avoid the combo. Please don't try it.
This depends on what you mean by "drink alcohol" <g> The only antibiotic that you absolutely CANNOT have any alcohol whatever is Flagyl or metronidazole - even splashing alcohol on your skin while taking that drug will make you vomit! It is generally not a good idea to drink lots of alcohol when your body is trying to heal from any infection. Alcohol slows everything down in your body and brain, and drinking more than maybe ONE drink the whole time you are on the antibiotic could make the infection last longer. The actual medication does not have any interaction with the alcohol like metronidazole does, though.
NO. You shouldn't skip a dose of any medicine, but Flagyl is given for very serious infections and you need to keep on schedule. Besides, Flagyl can be given rectally if taking it orally doesn't work, which it won't if you skip doses. Also, what's to keep you from skipping a dose often so you can have a drink. Some medicines can damage your liver if you stop taking them to drink alcohol. Take your meds until you're finished and then MAYBE you can have a drink.
You should take it with food, for the whole treatment. You should do the complete treatment. You should avoid alcohol (very important!) for the whole treatment (and 2 days after) - so you will avoid the "disulfuram side effect" that is a strong Flagyl side effect.
Metronidazole (an antibiotic) is the active ingredient in Flagyl.
Yes, that would be OK. Remember to take all of your Flagyl even after you start feeling better. You want to kill all the bacteria and not leave any hiding in your body! Also remember that Flagyl is the antibiotic which has a severe reaction with alcohol. Do not drink any alcohol while taking this, and check the ingredient labels of any liquids you put into your mouth or onto your skin. If it has alcohol as an ingredient, stay away from it.
