Yes it can, but there is a secret to using any antibiotic ointment: Dont use very much of it... In fact if you can see it on the new tattoo you probably are using too much...
Antibiotic companies want you to use lots of it so they can sell you more...Dont do it...The new tattoo needs the air as much as anything to heal, so make sure you use as little as possible. Wash the new tattoo in anti-bacterial soap, just with your fingers, no wash cloth, and always wash your hands before you wash or apply ointment. Do not let the ointment cake up over it. Wash the old off before you put the new on... Hope this helps..B

Do you need a prescription for bacitracin?

Baciguent is available over the counter. But another popular brand name Neosporin contains Bacitracin as one of its antibiotic agents along with Neomycin and Polymyxin B. Bacitracin can also be bought in pure form for those with allergies. Bacitracin is commonly used in combination with other topical antibiotics (usually polymyxin B and neomycin), it is used in ointment form for topical treatment of a variety of localized skin and eye infections, as well as for the prevention of wound infections. It is also commonly used as an aftercare antibiotic on tattoos. It is preferred over Neosporin because of its fewer ingredients, which lowers chances of an allergic reaction. In infants, it is sometimes administered intramuscularly for the treatment of pneumonias. This formulation is sold under the brand name Baciim. Clinical Note: This is a good alternative to Silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene) for burn patients with Sulfa-Allergy.
