Different countries will have different laws. In the United States, a Federal Law prohibits some people from buying or possessing a firearm.

Under the 1968 Gun Control Act, to purchase a firearm, you must be of legal age (18 for rifle or shotgun, 21 for handgun) and may not have been previously convicted of, or waiting trial for a crime that is a felony (serious crime, such as murder, robbery, rape, grand theft etc). Persons that have been convicted of a crime of domestic violence, have been adjudged mentally incompetent, drug addicts, illegal aliens, or have been dishonorably discharged from the military are NOT permitted to purchase a firearm. When buying from a dealer, a computer background check is conducted with law enforcement to verify the above conditions.

In addition, some states will have additional restrictions, These may include waiting periods, a state background investigation etc, along with limitations on what guns can be sold in that state.

And, of course, you must have the means to PAY for what you are buying!
