Same-sex marriage is illegal in most parts of the world. Presently, same-sex couples can marry in the Kingdom of Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, the Kingdom of Norway, the Republic of South Africa, the Kingdom of Spain and the Kingdom of Sweden. In the United States of America same-sex marriage is legal in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa, whilst legislation will take effect soon to legalise it in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Same-sex marriage was briefly legal in California. A further seventeen nations have Civil Partnerships which are usually equal to, but not the same as, the institution of marriage in terms of legal rights of both partners.

Additionally, it is not uncommon in some jurisdictions for same-sex couples to have a wedding if not a marriage. In the United Kingdom for example, same-sex couples are free to have any kind of legally non-binding religious ceremony (though anyone has the right to refuse to host or perform the ceremony), and have their binding Civil Union either before or after this ceremony. As such, it is possible in many liberal nations to be married in the eyes of the Church, provided one does not marry in the eyes of the law.
