A .38 Special can shoot the cartridge marked "38 Short Colt". It CANNOT shoot what many people CALL a .38 Short- which is the .38 S&W. The .38 S&W in not only shorter than the Special, it is fatter. The 2 do not interchange.

Can you shoot regular 38 caliber ammunition in a 38 special?

NO, a 38 Special is actually .357 caliber. NO, a 38 Special is actually .357 caliber. A 38 special is NOT a 357 magnum. Both bullet heads are about .357 in diameter. The difference between the 38 and 357 is the length of the brass case. The 357 brass case is a bit longer then the 38 special case, and the gun powder load is a bit higher then the 38 special load...... Further, you can shoot a 38 special case in the 357 magnum revolver, however, you cannot fire a 357 magnum round in the 38 special. The 38 special cylinder is too short for the 357 round......

Can a colt detective special 38 caliber fire 38 special shoot wadcutters?

Can you shoot 38 special amunition in a 38 revolver?

There are several .38 calibers out there which have had revolvers chambered for them. .38 Special and .38 Colt Special are the same thing, so if you have a .38 that is either one of those two the answer is yes. .38 S&W, .38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt are not interchangeable with the .38 Special, so if you have an older gun that is one of those, the answer is no. If you can't figure it out, check with a reputable gunsmith.
