No.No.
Yes these voltages are close enough to be interchangeable.
It sounds like you are referring to a universal adapter. A universal ac adaptor has several tips, which adjust the voltage and amperage, and the higher the voltage, the lower the amperage. Therefore, if your adapter is 4.3 amps at 15 volts, it will be significantly lower amperage at 19 volts.
Yes it can. It's close enough to the laptop's power requirements to charge it.
19/185 =0.1027
(current * voltage) / psu efficiency (5 amps * 19 volt) / ~0.8 = ~118 watts
Adding detail to my question... I have a laptop that has full wifi, and another with no wifi, and it cannot use an adapter... Is there any way I can connect wirelessly to a spare router I have, as well as my internet enabled router (I have a USB WiFi adapter I could use to make 2 connections), and then connect the laptop with no wifi to the spare router via ethernet to get internet? The laptop with wifi is windows 8, and the other is fedora 19. Thanks!
Using an adapter with a higher amp output is generally safe as the laptop will only draw the current it needs. However, if the voltage is the same, it should be compatible. The laptop can draw up to 3.42 amps safely from the 4.74-amp adapter. Just make sure the voltage matches (19 volts in this case) to avoid damaging the laptop.
No. Two reasons.... It is a much higher voltage (30V) and will destroy your laptop. Even if the Volts were correct (19), the Amps aren't sufficient... The original can output much more than the replacement. If the laptop needs 3.42A (which it likely does) a 2.5A just isn't going to have enough umph to power it.
No, it is not recommended to use a 19-volt output adapter for a device that requires a 12-volt output. Using a higher voltage adapter can damage the device and potentially create a safety hazard. It is important to always use the correct voltage adapter specified by the manufacturer.
Its fairly simple. Get a solar panel (a couple hundred bucks used), a deep cycle 12 volt (marine) battery (70 bucks) , and a Notebook DC CAR Charger Power Adapter (18 bucks on ebay). The DC car charger power adaptor should have multiple settings ( 15, 16, 17,18, 19, and 20 volts) so you can set it to the voltage for your laptop. To find the setting just look on the transformer box that's part of the power cord for your laptop. Hook up the solar panel to the deep cycle battery. Then run a wire from the positive terminal to the nipple end of the car cigarette lighter adapter and a wire from the negative terminal to the side metal connection of the cigarette lighter adapter. There ya go. About 4 hours of laptop use per day of sunshine. Make sure your connections are good (and safe) and consider a charge controller to make sure you don't over charge the battery.
