NO! There are 50 bulbs in a 2.5 volt string or 125 volts.

There are 35 bulbs in a 3.5 volt string or 122.5 volts.

If you put 50 3.5 volt bulbs in you will have 175 volts and most american house have 110 volt service so you will have dim bulbs.

Let's do the math. Watts equals Volts times Amps. So, a 3.5-volt bulb is expecting 0.12 Amps meaning 0.42 Watts. If you decrease the Volts to 2.5 Volts, it will now be 0.21 Watts. So, the answer is: it's okay. (For the smarties, I solved for the resistance of the bulb, determined the current, and applied 2.5 volts)

Yes you can. It will be dimmer than a 2.5v bulb, but it will work. However if you replace a 3.5v bulb with a 2.5v bulb, it will burn out quickly.
