Dozens of companies made 1911s, and there is no commonality to Serial numbers. If you 1011 is a Colt, you can contact colt customer service.
Depends. Who made your 1911? For a fee, Colt will research dates and original purchaser. But not all 1911s were made by Colt. PS- 1911 or 1911A1? Also you can check at proofhouse.com for list of dates by serial numbers.
The COLT 1911 was only made in the US- there are other 1911 style pistols made elsewhere, but they are not Colts. The name changed to 1911AI in the early 20th century, so there are a LOT more 1911A1s than 1911s. There were about 2.7 million military 1911A1s made during it's service life (by Colt, Ithaca, Remington, etc) and likely several million civilian versions.
John Browning. He designed and built the first 1911s. Although John Browning designed the first 1911 hand gun, Colt actually built and sold the first ones. The year it was built for sale was in 1911, thus the model number as well. Colt still uses the number m1911.

The term "1911" is generally used to refer to the Colt 1911 semi-automatic pistol. it is a pistol, and not a revolver. However, there ARE revolvers that fire the same cartridge- the .45 ACP. But they are not referred to as "1911s".
