Winston-Salem, NC?

Winston-Salem is a large and thriving city in the state of North Carolina. The city has several nicknames, the most common of which include Twin City, in reference to the joining of the separate cities Winston and Salem, and Camel City, which refers to the tobacco industry in the area, which is led by Camel Cigarettes. As the nickname Twin City reveals, Winston-Salem originally began as two cities. Salem was established in 1766 by a Moravian settlement congregation. Winston was not founded until much later, in 1849. The two municipalities were joined in 1889. Winston-Salem quickly grew into an industrial city that produced cigarettes and textiles. The tobacco industry was especially important there. As such, the Reynolds family, which founded the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (which produces Camel cigarettes) played a huge role in the growth of the city. In fact, the high amounts of materials imported by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for creating cigarettes led to the city being designated as an official port of entry, despite its inland location of 200 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Given the rich and diverse history of Winston-Salem, it should come as no surprise that history makes up a large part of the local tourism industry. There are several fascinating history museums located in Winston-Salem. The most prominent of these is the historic Old Salem district, a living history museum that focuses on recreating the essence of Salem between 1766 and 1840. Old Salem is situated on 100 acres of restored landscapes and features eighty historical buildings, eleven heirloom gardens and five historic stores. It is also home to the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and the Old Salem Toy Museum. Other local museums in Winston-Salem (outside of Old Salem) include the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Wake Forest University Museum of Anthropology, Sciworks (a children's science museum) and the Children's Museum of Winston-Salem. Besides touring museums, Winston-Salem visitors and locals enjoy participating in and attending athletic events, including the Dash baseball team, the Twin City Cyclones hockey team and local college basketball. Winston-Salem is a major destination for college students, because it is the location of several universities and liberal arts colleges, including Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Salem College, Piedmont Baptist College, Winston-Salem Bible College and Forsyth Technical Community College.
