Well you can find biodegradable ones online if you search on Google. Most coffee filters are paper. They are light paper, so they will biodegrade.

In fact, using biodegradable filters (or filter paper) removes a substance called cafestol, a cholesterol-elevating substance. You can read more on the link below.

Yes. All fibrous cigarette butts are biodegradable, with the typical breakdown period being 4 to 9 months. The butts are made of cellulose acetate. Wood pulp is combined with acetic acid and acetic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric acid. Then, through partial hydrolysis, the sulfates are removed. An extrusion process then occurs with acetone. The result is the fiber used to make the filter. 100% biodegradable, photodegradable, and chemically degradable.

However, there are a number of poisonous chemicals in smoked filters, some degradable, some not. And, there are several trillion smoked filters generated each year. These chemicals will cause issues in areas where too many butts are degrading in the same area. Like any litter, biodegradable or not, if they build up too quickly, they can contaminate an area, both aesthetically and chemically.

Most cigarette filters are made from cellulose acetate and the time it takes to decompose varies according to whom you ask!

The problem (and deception) lies in the fact that "cellulose acetate" is a generic name given to the polymers of cellulose acetate. A polymer is a compound which contains chains of molecules of the simple chemical. The longer the chains, the longer the polymer takes to biodegrade. LEGO bricks were once made from (poly)cellulose acetate and there are pretty well indestructible. On the other hand, the chain lengths of the (poly)cellulose acetate used in cigarette filters are much shorter (but not standard) and they biodegrade in a matter of weeks or months, depending on the actual chain length and the environmental conditions.

The chain length in cigarette filters is around the same as that of the cellulose acetate used in disposable nappies (diapers). It is estimated that 21 billion disposable nappies end up in landfill every year in the US alone.

NO they are not. Cigarette filters are made from a synthetic polymer cellulose acetate, which may be broken down after about 12 years, but will NEVER biodegrade.

The tobacco and paper in cigarettes are biodegradable, but the filters present in most cigarettes are not. Filters represent a significant percentage of street litter.
