The social structure of the Roman Republic was class orientated. The patricians and plebeians made up then nobility with the equites as the middle class. The proletariat were the rest of the free citizens, followed by the freedmen and slaves.
Southern Colonies had slaves to do their work on the plantation, Middle Colonies had some slaves but they were kinda in the middle, while the New England Colonies had no slaves.
The keeping of slaves is not democratic. A democracy only truly exists when everyone in the country has the possibility to become a citizen and thus vote. By having slaves the best a country could become is either an Aristocracy or an Oligarchy.
