No. Let's say at 240 Volts you appliance draws 2 Amps. This means the resistance of the appliance is 120 Ohms. If you plug it into a 120 Volt source you still have the same resistance and by Ohm's Law

Current = 120 V / 120 Ohms or 1 Amp. The 1 Amp likely won't be sufficient to allow the appliance to perform properly.

Depends. Some items, like cell phone chargers, are often made to work on both 120 V and 240 V circuits, in which case it's OK.

But a thing made only for 120 V will be destroyed immediately by the overload if connected to a 240 V source.

Yes. But it depends on the type of appliances you want to import and use in the U.S. Most electric and electronics will work fine in 110-120V but be worry about those with heat elements such as microwave ovens, tea pots, rice cookers, hair dryers and fan heaters will work but will be producing 20% more heat than their heating specifications which could result in a fire hazzard and/or shorter life span of the product. I have imported some non-heating element appliances and they work perfect with not a single increase in wattage or heat.

In North America they do. Small appliance loads that usually plug into wall receptacles all depend upon 120 volts to operate. As the appliance loads get larger so does the voltage. Hot water tanks, baseboard heaters, electric ranges, clothes dryers, heat pumps, domestic water well pumps all depend on 240 volts to operate. The use of the 120/240 volt supply system allows the two voltages to be used simultaneously.

Answer 2

It depends on the appliance. Many portable power supplies (phone chargers, computer power supplies etc.) now work on both 120V and 240V. They are labeled (for example) '100-240V~ 50-60 Hz'. You will still need a plug adaptor.

If the appliance is labelled '200-240V' (or something similar), it will not work on 120V.

Yes, a 120V appliance will typically work on a 115V outlet. The slight voltage difference should not have a significant impact on the appliance's operation.

Yes, as long as the device is within 10% of the rated voltage.

Only simple equipment like light bulbs or convector heaters. Anything with a transformer or a motor in it will definitely not run on dc and might blow the fuse.

Can you convert an existing 120V plug on an appliance to a 240V plug not speaking of a converter but actually changing the plug so there are no long term effects on the appliance?

No, you cannot convert an appliance designed for 120V to operate safely at 240V by changing the plug alone. The internal components of the appliance need to be designed to handle the higher voltage to prevent damage and ensure safety. Modifying the plug without considering the appliance's design may lead to serious damage or pose a safety hazard.

Can you use 120V appliances on a 240V outlet?

No, 120V appliances are designed for use with a 120V outlet. Plugging them into a 240V outlet can cause damage to the appliance or pose a safety hazard. It is important to always match the voltage requirements of the appliance with the voltage supply.

Can 230V appliance plug into a 230v outlet?

Yes, a 230V appliance can be plugged into a 230V outlet as long as the outlet is compatible with the appliance's plug type and configuration. It's important to ensure that both the voltage and plug type match to avoid damaging the appliance or causing a safety hazard.

If you use a 120V appliance out of the US will you still be able to use it in the US after?

If the appliance is designed to operate at 120V only, it should work in the US but may require an appropriate plug adapter. However, if the appliance is not dual voltage and needs a different voltage in the other country, it may not work properly or could be damaged when used in the US. Always check the appliance's voltage requirements before using it in different countries.

What is an appliance cord?

An appliance cord is a flexible electrical cable that connects an appliance to a power source. It typically has a plug on one end for connecting to an electrical outlet and is wired to the appliance on the other end. These cords come in different lengths and designs to suit various appliances' power needs.
