Viruses are considered nonliving because they cannot carry out cellular functions on their own. However, they exhibit some characteristics of living organisms when they infect host cells and replicate. They rely on host cells to reproduce, making them dependent entities that blur the line between living and nonliving.

Why is HIV not considered living?

HIV is a virus, and since viruses require another organism to carry out the functions that would classify it as a living organism, it's considered "dead," that is until it finds a host.

What makes virus nonliving?

Viruses lack the ability to carry out metabolic processes on their own, such as generating energy or reproducing. They need a host cell to replicate and are considered nonliving entities because they do not meet all the criteria for life, such as growth and response to stimuli.
