Therefore there has to be an agreed definition of a kilogram. This means there has to be a standard kilogram that everyone can use to set their own kilogram. At present the standard kilogram is a block of platinum held in Paris, there are plans to redefine the kilogram in terms of the reaction between a fixed magnet and the magnetic field set up by an electric current passing through a wire, the kilogram will still weigh the same but the means of setting it will change.
