Primary succession occurs on land that is new and has never had a flora and fauna example: glacier retreats, lava flows. Secondary succession occurs on land that has been cleared example: by fire, of flora and fauna, but which still has viable seeds and spores in the soil.

Both primary and secondary succession involve the establishment of plant and animal communities in an ecosystem over time. In both cases, pioneer species play a crucial role in initiating the process, and both types of succession result in the eventual development of a stable and diverse ecosystem.

They both taking along time period to form the forest back.

Primary approximately thousands of year because they started from an empty land.

Secondary approximately only take hundreds of years because they started from forest that have been destroyed by natural disaster, burning, or whatever reason that destroyed the forest but it still has some soil.

Similarity;

Both part of succession.

Difference;

Primary-

  • nothing there before
  • happens after volcanic eruption
  • occurs when there is no good nutrient-filled soil
  • slower than secondary succession; gradual
  • needs pioneer species (look this up either in a dictionary or wikipedia.com)

Secondary;

  • occurs after an ecological disturbances and disruption
  • happens after forest fires, tsunamis, floods, harvesting, and hurricanes
  • faster than primary succession
  • no need for pioneer species
  • reforestration happens sometimes

Bold=look up in dictionary or, as highly recommended, Wikipedia.com

the result of primary succsion would be that something like a forest start to grow in a place it didnt exsist before like in a barren land whilst a secondary would that something would stat to grow after it was primarly destroyed ex: a forest fire happens a few weeks later or even years another grows either naturally or someone plants it hope it helped ;))

What is the difference between primary and secondary succesion?

Primary succession occurs on newly exposed surfaces with no soil, while secondary succession occurs in areas with existing soil that has been disturbed or altered. Primary succession starts with pioneer species that can survive harsh conditions, while secondary succession starts with species that can quickly colonize open areas.

What type of succession occurs in an area where an ecosystem has been disturbed?

primary succession

How is primary succession similar to secondary succession?

Primary succession and secondary succession are both processes of ecological succession where new plant and animal communities develop over time. The main similarity is that they both involve the sequential colonization of an area by different species, leading to the establishment of a stable ecosystem. Both processes are influenced by factors such as soil formation, climate, and available resources.

Why is the difference between primary and secondary succession not always clear?

The difference between primary and secondary succession may not always be clear because both processes involve the establishment and growth of plant and animal communities over time. Primary succession occurs in areas that were previously devoid of life, like after a volcanic eruption, while secondary succession occurs in areas that already had life but were disturbed, like after a forest fire. The transitions between primary and secondary succession can be blurred in cases where the initial disturbance was severe, erasing most previous lifeforms.

Desribe how secondary succession in a forest differs from primary succession after a volcano?
