Faults are actually the reason earthquakes start. A fault is two Techtonic Plates

rubbing against each other, creating tension and stress. When the

tension and stress overcomes the strength of the fault, the two plates slip/move,

causing the ground to move in various ways, which is also called an earthquake.

Techtonic Plates: plates made up of the earths crust that are moving along a

layer of magma inside the earth, called the mantle.

Faults are surfaces along which rocks have broken and moved past each other, often due to tectonic forces. Fractures are breaks in rocks where there is no movement along the surface. Faults are associated with earthquakes, while fractures can occur without significant displacement of rocks.

The difference between a joint and a fault begins with size. The joint is much smaller than the fault. The joint has very little movement while the fault often has lateral movement.
