The ruptured follicle on the ovary is called the Corpus Luteum. It acts as a temporary endocrine gland and secretes estrogen and progesterone. If the egg is fertilized and implantation occurs, the trophoblast cells of the blastocyst secrete the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin . The forming placenta will take over progesterone production.

Occasionally the Corpus Luteum will fill with fluid and cause a cyst. It can be uncomfortable and even painful as the cyst eventually bursts.

Repeated cysts can cause scar tissue and is often called Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS.

The egg sac that secretes hormones after the release of an ovum is the corpus luteum. It forms from the ruptured follicle after ovulation and produces hormones like progesterone to prepare the uterus for potential pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, leading to a drop in hormone levels and the start of the menstrual cycle.
