Marigolds are small plants suitable for borders and low plantings. They are natural pest repellents which is the reason that our grandparents were so fond of them.

Carnations are similar in appearance but come in a much wider color variation. They also are not pest repellent, but tend to grow much taller and spread. Their average height is about three feet when in the bush, whereas the marigold seldom gets above 6-8 inches tall.

There are two types of generic carnation bushes. One grows the standard size carnation which is about 3-4 inches across. The miniature variety is a multiple flower stem, and is usually about one inch across.

The marigold is quite similar in appearance to the miniature carnation, but only grows in the yellow-orange family. The carnation comes in any color of the rainbow, pink, red, yellow, green, white, and variegated.
