A map legend is the little box in the corner of the map. It contains icons to tell you what is a city and what the populations are, along with major landmarks or buildings.

It also contains icons to help you figure out what is a interstate or county road.

You will also find a legend to assist you in figuring out mileage from one place to another.

map legendA map legend gives you information that includes: how many inches = 1 mile, what a dirt road looks like (-------) as compared to a highway (_________), what a little picnic table symbol means, or what population range is represented by what size font. For example, a large city like Chicago will be spelled out in very large letters, but a small town like Buffalo, Montana will be printed very small.
