An underwater earthquake occurred. The seafloor shifted by 15m and caused a large displacement in water, which caused a wave to form. The shock waves which radiated out of the epicenter also aided in the formation of the tsunami. The earthquake was 9.3 in magnitude and caused a wave which killed 280,000 people in total. The tsunami hit Sumatra worst, as it was closest to the epicentre.

In 2004, a massive undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1-9.3 struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. This earthquake triggered a series of tsunamis that devastated coastal areas across Southeast Asia, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life.

in 2004 an earthquake occurred under the sea where from there the sea bed itself (along where the destructive plate boundary had collided) lifted up to as much as 500 feet. This then lifted the water which then dropped back down creating an outward ripple effect. The tsunami itself at this point was not a tall wave but in fact the opposite a very flat and long ripple measuring 200 miles in length. As this long ripple reaches the coastline the water begins to get shallower and so as a result the ripple sloes down and the back of the ripple catches up building it in height and resulting in a huge tsunami.
