There are several factors that affect international tourism. Geographical features can refer to both human and physical geography, therefore the factors are a combination of both:

  • natural scenery (Rockies, Mount Everest etc)
  • climate (hotter regions are more attractive)
  • culture (languages, customs, clothes, food etc)
  • social (larger wealth and longer work breaks lead to more time to travel the world)
  • economics (exchange rate, jobs, infrastructure)
  • politics (After 9/11, less Americans have traveled overseas)
  • sporting events (Olympics, Rugby World Cup etc)

In recent years, there has been an increase in international tourism is comparison to prior years. This is mainly because of the following reasons:

  • personnel in the industry are more educated
  • more foreign languages are spoken
  • procedures at the airport and other transportation locations are faster and efficient
  • use of technology to book vacations
  • world wide use of credit cards
  • improvements in communication
  • world wide brands (Holiday Inn, McDonalds etc)
