In the metric system the prefix milli~ always referes to one-thousandth of the base unit.

millilitre = 0.001 litres

millimetre = 0.001 metres

milligramme = 0.001 grammes

But a millipede is not a creature with 0.001 legs! ;-)

Milli is a prefix which denotes one thousandth of or 1/1000. Milliliter is one one thousandth of a liter, and a Millimeter is one one thousandth of a meter, etc.
