The earth is made up of many plates all overlapping, when the rub against each other, due to the build up of force underneath, this causes an earthquake. The plates are large and don't run through some ccuontries. However one thing is for sure, that when one strikes, the people inhabitating the area- like in Haiti- live's will never be the same

Earthquake fatalities can be caused by collapsing buildings, landslides, tsunamis, and fires triggered by the shaking. The level of preparedness, building codes, population density, and infrastructure quality in an area can also influence the number of casualties.
