To address rust under a bathtub, you can start by removing the rust using a rust remover or a solution of vinegar and baking soda. After removing the rust, apply a rust-inhibiting primer and paint to prevent further rusting. Consider having a professional inspect and address any underlying issues that may have caused the rust.

Why is there orange water in the bathtub when the water is hot but not when the water is cold?

The orange water in the bathtub when hot is likely caused by rust from the water heater or pipes getting stirred up by the hot water flow. When the water is cold, the rust particles settle at the bottom and do not mix as readily with the water. It's advisable to have a plumber check the water heater or pipes to address the issue.

How do I build my own bathtub bench?

You can purchase or build a bathtub bench. Unfortuantely, there are no designs for a tub bench so the best way would be to pick your materials, if going with wood, something that will not splinter. Attach legs, a handle and back and you are done. You can see a picture at http://www.amazon.com/Bathtub-transfer-Adjustable-Lightweight-Rust-Resistant/dp/B000SOQ30E.

What does rust do?

RustRust is actually a chemical reaction between the iron found in metals and the oxygen found in water. If you have an older tub, the rust forming at the bottom of the bathtub could be caused by the iron found in the drain cover. However, since most sinks and tubs nowadays have rustproof drain covers, it could be your water that's causing the rust instead.
