To reduce earthquake damage, new buildings must be made stronger and more flexible like in buildings you should have base isolators, tension ties, dampers, flexible gas pipes and so. For houses you should not have heavy things hanging above your bed. Strap the water heater to the wall. Bolt the house to its concrete foundation. Those are good ways to make your house safer for an earthquake.

Securing heavy furniture and appliances to the wall to prevent them from falling during an earthquake is one way to make your home safer. Additionally, installing safety latches on cabinets to prevent items from falling out during shaking can help reduce hazards in your home.

put heavier things likes vases and books on the bottom shelf so they wont fall from a high spot and find a safe place within your rooms and outside your home for everyone to meet up to make sure everyone's okay

1)You can take anything off the walls that could fall on someone.

2)Take off anything which you would not want to break.

3)Get a foundation inspection and check for any weakness in the house such as cracks.

There isn't much you can do to prepare because we never know where or when one will hit. If you have breakable items at home you can buy a clay type material that will hold items in place. Heavy furniture like a dresser can be bolted into the wall. You and your family can have a plan of what to do when one happens and you can keep an emergency kit to use. Knowing where gas lines are is also good so you can turn them off.
