The majority of time zone boundaries are international borders. Within countries that have multiple contiguous time zones, the boundaries usually coincide with political borders of the country's subdivisions. In a few of those countries, the time zone boundaries deviate from state, provincial or territorial borders to pass through more sparsely populated areas, to follow a certain line of longitude, not necessarily 7.5° plus a multiple of 15°, or to divide a subdivision that itself spans more than 15° of longitude.
