The sad parts are when Billy is hunting in the championships and his grandfather badly sprains his foot. And after that it all goes down hill. Old Dan dies shortly after that from protecting Billy from a mountain lion. Little Ann then dies because she has no will to live anymore now that Old Dan is dead. She dies on Old Dan's grave in Billy's arms.
