Blood agar contains red blood cells as a nutrient source for bacteria, while chocolate agar is made from lysed red blood cells which provides additional nutrients. Chocolate agar also lacks the natural clotting factors present in blood agar, making it better for growing fastidious bacteria like Haemophilus species. Additionally, chocolate agar has a distinct dark brown color due to the lysed blood cells.
