A hurricane is a covective tropical cyclone with 1 minute sustained winds of at least 74 mph. Hurricanes and similar storms referred to as typhoons or simply cyclones depending on where they occur form over warm ocean water and have an organized, large-scale cyclonic circulation, turning counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere or clockwise in the southern. Unlike a thunderstorm a hurricane is its own storm system composed of smaller thunderstorms and as a whole lasts for several days or even weeks.

A thunderstorm is virtually any rainstorm that produces thunder and lightning. They are not necessarily organized and do not necessarily produce strong winds. Most do not rotate. Usually a single thunderstorm lasts less than a hour.

A thunderstorm is any rainstorm that produces thunder and lightning. A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with sustained winds of at least 74 mph (119 mph). One important difference is that while a thunderstorm is just an individual storm, typically less than 50 miles across, a hurricane is an entire storm system usually about 300 miles across.

A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with sustained winds of at least 74 mph. Characteristics of hurricanes:

  • Are hundreds of miles wide.
  • Form only over warm ocean water.
  • Last for days and sometimes well over a week.
  • Produce rain and flooding in addition to powerful winds.
  • Are independent, self sustaining storm systems.
  • Have winds ranging from 74 to about 200 mph

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground. Characteristics of tornadoes:

  • Are rarely over a mile wide, usually under 1/4 mile.
  • Usually form over land
  • Usually last minutes, rarely a few hours
  • Cause damage via wind and debris
  • Are dependent on a large storm to develop and keep going
  • have winds ranging from 65 to about 300mph
  • Often have a condensation funnel.

A thunderstorm is any rainstorm that produces thunder and lightning.

Characteristics of thunderstorms:

  • Are typically about 15 miles across.
  • Can form over land or water
  • Typically last about 30 minutes.
  • Usually do not cause damage
  • May potentially cause damage through high winds, flooding, hail, and lightning.
  • May form independently or as part of a larger system,

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground. The winds in a tornado are strong enough to damage, or even completely destroy trees and man-made structures.

A thunderstorm is any rainstorm that produces thunder and lightning. Typically a thunderstorm consists of a single convective cell that forms and dissipates in less than an hour. a thunderstorm may be part of an organized storm system or form on its own from local convergence and instability.

A tropical storm is defined as a tropical cyclone with sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph. A tropical storm is its own storm system with an organized circulation, a low pressure center, and multiple thunderstorm cells that help sustain it.
