Heartburn is caused by the acidic effects of stomach acid, particularly in the throat which isn't protected from acid.

It can be treated a number of ways. The simplest approach is to take a weak base that will counteract and neutralize the acid, such as calcium carbonate (tums), magnesium hydroxide (Rolaids) etc. The carbonates combine with acids to form water and carbon dioxide.

Another approach is to block the histamine that triggers the release of stomach acid with an antihistamine like cimetidine. This is typically a little slower acting, but longer lasting than neutralizing the acid as above.

A third approach is to block the secretion of hydrogen ions (acid) in the stomach. This is done with some of the newer medications such as Prevacid and Prilosec. These can be very long lasting, and are often very effective.

Keep in mind that poorly treated heartburn can cause permanent damage to the esophagus, and can cause CANCER. You should always consult a physician with any treatment regimen.

There is also a surgical remedy for heartburn called Nissen Fundoplication. Essentially by stretching a part of the stomach around the esophagus, when the stomach contracts, it shuts off reverse flow up the esophagus, and thus prevents heartburn.

Heartburn relief typically involves neutralizing stomach acid using substances like antacids, which contain bases that react with the acid to form water and a salt. Proton pump inhibitors reduce acid production in the stomach, while H2 blockers inhibit histamine receptors that stimulate acid production. These methods help alleviate heartburn symptoms by reducing the acidity in the stomach.
