Yes, during the Carboniferous period (i.e. the time when most of our coal resources formed) the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere were much much higher than they are now. This produced a greenhouse effect so strong that not only did the glaciers melt away but there was also no polar icecaps!

Why do glaciers float and not sink to the bottom of the ocean?

Glaciers are made of ice, which is less dense than water. Therefore, fragments of glaciers that break off into water, called icebergs, will float.

How would sea levels be affected if all of Earths glaciers got bigger and new glaciers formed?

If all of Earth's glaciers were to get larger and new glaciers formed, it would lead to a decrease in global sea levels. This is because glaciers are formed when snow accumulates over a long period of time, compressing into ice. As more ice is stored in glaciers, less water is in the oceans, resulting in a lower sea level.

Why huge glaciers do not melt in sun.whereas ice cubes taken out from refrigerators melt within minutes?

It's not that glaciers don't melt in the sun; if you watch videos of glaciers you'll see water pouring off them. The difference is size: it takes far less time for a one-ounce ice cube to melt than a million-gallon glacier.

Are glaciers less dense then fresh snow?

No, glaciers are more dense than fresh snow. Over time, layers of snow accumulate and compress under their own weight to form dense glacial ice. This densification process reduces air pockets within the snow, resulting in the formation of denser ice in glaciers.

What is a glaciers made of?

Glaciers are made of ice that has been formed a long time ago.

Did dinosaurs drink from springs fed by glaciers?

How can mountains tell us what glaciers existed at the beginning of time?

At the beginning of time there were no mountains or glaciers, there were also no planets or stars. Mountains can tell us where glaciers existed by the shape of the valleys between them, a "U" shaped valley usually means a glacier once flowed down it.

What are large sheets of ice that do not melt called?

Large sheets of ice that do not melt are called glaciers. Glaciers are formed when snow accumulates over time and compacts into ice, flowing slowly due to gravity.
