The mouth and nose are connected in the throat. When a person does CPR on another person and breathes into the mouth, they have to pinch the nose close or the air will come out of the nose instead of going into the lungs. When a person is intubated before surgery, care has be taken so that the tube doesn't go down into the stomach but into the lungs.

Swallowed fluids can sometimes come out through the nostrils during laughter because the nasopharynx and oropharynx share a common pathway at the back of the mouth. When a person laughs or giggles while drinking, the soft palate and uvula are elevated, temporarily blocking off the nasopharynx from the oropharynx. This can cause liquids to be redirected towards the nasopharynx and ultimately come out through the nostrils.
