(2M + 2H_2O \rightarrow 2MOH + H_2), where M represents the alkali metal.
Alkali earth metals, such as calcium and magnesium, do not react as violently as alkali metals with water. However, they still react to form hydroxides and hydrogen gas. The reaction is less vigorous compared to alkali metals.
The products of the reaction between alkali metals and water are a hydroxide and hydrogen:2 Na + 2 H2O = 2 NaOH + H2
