Opals can actually be made from metals and non-metals and are of perticluar interest in modern Nanotechnology because they posess something called a photonic bad gap. This basically allows no light of a certain wavelength to propagate through the structure. Natural opals are formed from silicon dioxide otherwise known as silica. In research opals are commonly created from silica, silicon, PMMA and polystyrene.

Opal is a mineral composed of silica and water, making it a nonmetal. It is formed from the gradual deposition of silica particles in cavities within rocks.
