Caterpillars are the larval stages of moths and butterflies. Most eat only leaves and bacteria, and are herbivores. Insects which eat plants are called phytophagous.

A few species of caterpillars are omnivores because they are entomophagous (eating other insects) or rarely, feeding on other species such as snails.
