Yes, on Maui and most places. Of course active volcanoes can be deadly. But both of the volcanoes on Maui are dormant. Yes, there are really two. The more prominent one is Haleakala, on the east/south part of the island, and is part of the Haleakala National Park, that actually stretches all the way down to the east coast at Kipuhulu and the "Sacred Pools". People hike in the crater, on its slopes, and through the rain forests and deserts around its base. People swim and dive into the many waterfall pools, most people visit the summit and the Visitors' Center there. There are horseback rides through the crate, heliocopter tours over it, people get up to reach the summit to witness dawn from 10,000 feet up, and some "adventurous" people "ride down the volcano" meaning they join of group of people on bicycles and coast down from the summit. There are even camp sites where you can pitch a tent at both the park entry and Kipahulu.
And when I say "both", actually the north/west side of Maui is also the result of volcanic activity and significant erosion. The 'Iao Valley is practically in the center of the "West Maui Mountains" known in Hawai'ian as Mauna Kahalwai and Hale Mahina (ref. Wikipedia) and you can drive right up into it -- it's a tropical rain forest in a way and for those who don't have the stamina for the "Road to Hana" is a taste of how lush things are. There is another park on the way to the Valley that is interesting, as well as some museums. So all in all both "volcanoes" provide a lot of opportunities for tourists.
