∙ 12y agoI just had a water pump installed in my Capri and while they're doing that, make sure they put a new timing belt in, because if you have a 91 Turbo w/ ac, it's a 4.5 hour job because the water pump is under the engine.

∙ 18y agoTo replace the water pump on a 1991 Mercury Topaz with a 2.3L engine, you'll need to drain the coolant, remove the drive belts, disconnect the hoses and electrical connections connected to the water pump, unbolt and remove the old water pump, clean the mating surface, install the new water pump, reattach all hoses and connections, refill the coolant, and run the engine to check for leaks. It's recommended to consult a repair manual or seek professional help if you're not experienced with this type of repair.

∙ 12y agoJack the car up, and support with jack stands, or if you have ramps. First, drain the rad from the hose to the water pump. Remove the hose from the metal pipe that goes to water pump. Remove the metal pipe that goes into the water pump, 1 nut, and pull it out of the water pump. There is just a rubber "o" ring inside for a gasket. You might have to wiggle the pipe around to get it out. Slack the screw that give tension to the belt, remove the belt. Now, the pump is clear and ready to take out. You need a good rachet set. Remove the 2 bolts from underneath, the 3rd is best to remove from on top. If you buy a jobber pump, you get only half of the pump. You have to un bolt the pieces and with the new gasket supplied, bolt the new water pump to the casing. Make sure all surfaces are very clean. You also get a new " o " ring gasket for the pipe seal. I use silicone around the "o" ring seal also. The pipe just slips in and then you just bolt it. That's it. Replace the rest of the parts in reverse order.

To replace the water pump on a 1992 Mercury Topaz with a 2.3 liter engine, you will need to drain the coolant, remove the drive belts, disconnect the hoses and electrical connectors, unbolt the old water pump, clean the surface, install the new water pump with a new gasket, reconnect hoses and belts, refill coolant, and bleed the system. It's recommended to consult the vehicle's service manual for specific instructions and torque specifications.
No, topaz does not float on water because it has a density that is greater than that of water. It will sink when placed in water due to its higher density.
On the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer, the water pump is typically located on the front of the engine, driven by the fan belt. It is usually housed behind the timing cover or at the front of the engine block. It is essential for circulating coolant to keep the engine running at the optimal temperature.
The specific gravity of topaz ranges from 3.49 to 3.57, indicating that it is denser than an equal volume of water.

The mercury switch installed on your engine is designed to short out the ignition to ground when the engine is tilted out of the water. The intended purpose is as a safety feature in the event of striking an under water obstruction during operation.
