The empire suffered under the control of unsuccessful or mentally ill emperors for a while. (Tiberius, Caligula, Nero) Although Claudius was an exception, his intelligence and managements did not save the empire from its turmoil of catastrophe.

∙ 6y agoThe reign of Augustus ended with his death. He died of natural causes at the age of 75.
Another credible version is that he was assassinated by his wife to set her son Tiberius up as emperor.

∙ 9y agoAugustus was succeeded by Tiberius, who was a reluctant emperor. He delegated government business to the head of the imperial guard, who then plotted to overthrow him. The conspiracy was foiled. Tiberius then instituted a series of treason trials.
