There are many species of bamboo. Several can grow in Alaska, if properly mulched in winter. The typical indoor ornamental bamboo, however, won't make it. Call around to your local greenhouses. Someone in the area will be carrying an Alaska-hardy bamboo. The bamboo genus Fargesia are the most cold-tolerant, many species surviving down to -20F. Some Phyllostachys can survive -10F. The key is to Mulch... Mulch... Mulch!

Bamboo typically grows best in tropical or temperate climates with mild winters. Alaska's cold climate and short growing season may present challenges for growing bamboo successfully. However, there are cold-hardy bamboo varieties available that may be more suitable for growing in Alaska, though extra care and protection would likely be needed during the winter months.
