It depends on the species of monkey. The majority of monkeys are herbivores, eating mostly fruit and seed, however there are a few species such as the squirrel monkeys that eat fruit, seeds and insects making them omnivores.

Monkeys do not exclusively eat fruits. They prefer to eat fruit when it is abundant and in season. But otherwise they feed on leaves using a method called wadging, to extract as much nutrients from the leaves.
