Actually, David Bowie wrote this song (apparently with Iggy Pop) and recorded it on his Absolute Beginners LP. The Edwyn Collins version is a cover. He does a great imitation of David Bowie though.

According to his complete discography, Jim Ed Brown never cut a song titled China Doll. However both David Bowie and the Grateful Dead released China Doll singles. The Bowie version was written by Bowie himself and Iggy Pop. The Dead version was written by Jerry Garcia and Robert hunter.
