Hillbilly is the slang term for people who live in rural, mountainous areas of the southern US, especially in the Ozark and Appalachian Mountains.
These mountains were settled by Scots-Irish people, and the terms "hill-folk" and "billy" to mean bloke or fellow were common among those people when the country was settled.
The stereotype of the hillbilly as inbred, ignorant, and violent has made this term a derogatory insult now, though some people who live in the mountains call themselves hillbillies as a joke. Hillbillies are thought to make moonshine and constantly feud between clans, have huge families, and eat road-kill.
In all honesty, the velyr must admit that their Grandfather did transport moonshine during the depression, raise 15 children, and has been known to eat opossum.
The first country music was created in the Appalachians mountain region when the first European immigrant settled there in the mid 18th century. They brought with them the ballads and children songs of the old country Later the folk music would turn into a new sound by using string instrument like the banjo and fiddle that became popular in the early 19th century, it was called hillbilly music, then later became known as country western music. Hillbilly music is the combination of Gospel and folk/dance music. It stayed mostly in the mountains and wasn't well known till the 1920's when fiddler John Carson was the first country singer to be recorded on record and became a instant hit. Not to long after the Carter Family from Virginia became very popular and made country music widespread and broke the rural circle that hillbilly music had stayed in for so long.
The first country song recorded and released was 'Arkansas Traveler' and 'Turkey in the Straw' by Fiddlers Henry Gilliland and A.C. Song was recorded on June 30,1922 for Victor Records, and released in April 1923.

They both actually have a good pitch and they are not sensless like rap or hip hop or R&B (no offense) But still country music isn't so hillbilly like as you think some people listen to country music thinking its pop or something else.

Hillbilly music later became known as country western music and started in the Appalachian region. Hillbilly music started when it combined gospel and folk/dance music together to get its unique sound. Most of the songs are about love, death, religion, nostalgia, sentimentality and sincerity. It is popular because of its humble beginnings and its simplicity on dealing with subjects close at hand (like work and poverty) for the common people.
"Hillbilly" or "country bumpkin" are alternative terms that may be used to refer to someone associated with rural or unsophisticated lifestyles.
