I'm sure violins could end up playing with all sorts of instruments; however, I think the most common ensembles a violin plays in are with the cello, bass, and viola. Quintets with 2 violins, a viola, a cello, and a bass are quite ordinary. Quartets with 2 violins, a viola, and a cello are also widespread. Duets and trios can be found for almost any type of instrumentation if you look in a music store. And if you didn't know, the orchestra is probably the most familiar ensemble in which a violin plays. ∙ 9y agoBecause there are four players in the ensemble (2 violins + 1 viola + 1 cello = 4 instruments).
Usually when any word means four-something, it will have a prefix such as quater-, quart-, tetra-, quadri-, quadru-, or quart-.
