Why do the bridge pins keep popping out of your acoustic guitar when you change the strings?

As the ball end of the string begins to wear the bridge plate a common problem is flying bridge pins. Have you ever tried restringing your guitar only to have the pins pop or fly out when tuning the string to tension? Usually, when a bridge pin will not stay put, wear on the bridge plate is allowing the ball end of the string to pull up and into the plate instead of locking itself against the plate. It could also be a very poorly fitting pin. If wear on the bridge plate is extensive a bridge plate veneer or plugs can help. Another tip which is quite helpful in this instance is to bend a slight hook in the end of the string when replacing the strings. This small "hook" will help the string to catch the edge of the plate and avoid being pulled up into the plate. When the ball end of a string wants to pull into the bridge plate hole the bridge pin must then smash or wedge the string in the hole to prevent it's slippage. Ideally the ball end of the string hooks around the edge of the plate and the bridge pin holds it there. On an instrument without problems or excessive wear it is even possible to remove a few treble string bridge pins when it is strung to tension. Though I do not recommend it, it illustrates the physics.

The strings are attached to the bridge by using pins (usually plastic) that are inserted into the bridge to "lock" the ball end of the string into the bridge. Once the strings have been removed from the tuners, the pins in the bridge must be removed to release the strings from the bridge. Use something made of hard plastic to pry the pins up from the bridge. Do not use metal as it will scratch the finish of the bridge. Most plastic string winders have a notch in them to allow prying up the pins and not damaging the bridge. Once the pins have been removed the old strings can be removed from the guitar. While the strings are off, take a little time to clean the fret board and the area underneath the strings that is difficult to get too when the strings are installed. Use a quality guitar cleaner or polish. If you don't have any you can use a very small amount of furniture polish to help remove any residue. When you are ready to reinstall the strings, place the ball end of the first string you wish to install into the appropriate hole in the bridge and then press the pin into the hole. Then, place the other end of the string into the appropriate tuner hole. The string will be longer than necessary so insert the string until there is enough slack in the string so that there will be at least a coulple of revolutions on the tuner until the slack is taken out. The amount of slack needed is different depenting on the diameter of the string. The larger strings will only need a couple of revolutions, where the smaller strings may need four, five or six revolutions. Repeat this process for each string and when you are done, tune the guitar to standard. If you do not have a guitar tuner, you can find tuners on the internet that create the proper tones to tune the guitar too. Remember the strings will stretch for some time after being installed so it may be more difficult to maintain the instrument in tune and may require more frequent tuning initially. The time it takes for the strings to stabilize and stop stretching varies depending on the strings and how they are installed.

There are also Acoustic/Electic guitars which are hollow body but also have pickups, they have a really nice sound and are useful for playing in front of large audiences where all of the other instruments are amplified. The bridge is a small piece of wood with slots in it for the strings that sits on top of the skin. It isn't fastened on, so if there aren't any strings holding in place, it may no longer be there! A new one can be purchased for a small price through many music supply stores. The bridge position is critical! It should be the same distance from 12th fret as the nut is, plus just a titch. (The nut is the bar the strings come over off of the tuning pegs, or the 0 fret.)So, purchase a good set of banjolele strings from your favorite provider. They will be nylon and some of them may be wire wound.Knot the string in place on the tail, run it over the bridge, across the nut and into the tuning knob. Repeat and you should be good to go!

Is this electric or acoustic? Changing the strings can give it a brighter sound, try experimenting with different gauge strings. If its electric, pickups can change the sound alot. Effects can also change the sound and what amp you have can also work.

It seems you are not pressing on the strings hard enough to change their pitch.

If acoustic guitar strings get this redish color does it mean its time to change them?
Well im guessing this "reddish colour" would be rust. So yes. But dont worry. With time you will be able to hear the difference in strings and when you need to change them. And also dependent on the brand. I use anti-rust/long life Elixer 10-50's. They go great and last a long time
